Review of rodent control for the Australian chicken meat and egg industries
This final report on current rodent control strategies employed by the Australian chicken meat and egg industries also includes a manual for producers on use of rodenticide products.
In this collaborative project with AgriFutures Chicken Meat, researchers from the South Australian Research and Development Institute sought to understand how rodents are currently managed by the chicken meat and egg industries in Australia.
To understand this, the researchers conducted a nationwide survey which included a survey of rodent observations, rodent control, and rodenticide use in the Australian chicken meat and egg industries as well as a comprehensive literature review of available and emerging rodent control products, strategies and technologies.
The project found that the economic burden associated with rodent infestations is difficult to quantify given their insidious nature and hidden impact, but is likely to be significant. The survey found that rodent control in Australian poultry operations primarily consists of the use of poison baits, specifically, anticoagulant rodenticides.
